A 174-turbine offshore wind farm is to be built at a site 32km south of Long Island in New York State. When complete, the Empire Wind facility is expected to have a capacity of 2GW, enough to power 1 million households in the New York metropolitan area.
Dutch dredging firm Van Oord and America’s Great Lakes Dredge & Dock (GLDD) will be the main contractors for subsea rock installation works.
Van Oord’s scope includes preparing the seabed for the installation of monopile foundations, and GLDD will install “armour” rocks as a stabilisation and protection layer after the piling has been completed.
Both companies will access rocks produced from domestic quarries, which will drive materials and employment in New York State.
The consortium plans to start operations in the mid-2020s.
